Howard Wiseman (aka Howie Wiseman)
Howard M. Wiseman is an award-winning, working Writer and Director who has lived and worked in film and TV in Los Angeles, New York, Montreal, and Toronto.

WRITING:

He is a Writer's Guild of Canada award-winning screenwriter (2004). He was involved in the early development of the feature film, "Dance Me Outside") for the ACADEMY AWARD NOMINATED Director, NORMAN JEWISON, and was, for many years the assistant to ACADEMY AWARD WINNING Screenwriter and Novelist, WILLAM KELLEY ("WITNESS").

Wiseman co-wrote the comedy "MY FAMLY TREASURE," starring Bitty Schram ("Monk"), produced in Moscow, and also acted in it. He has written over a dozen feature screenplays and had many of them optioned, some numerous times, to some of Hollywood's top independent producers, including Peter Newman ("Smoke, "Blue In The Face," Swimming to Cambodia," and Steven Haft, "Dead Poets Society," "Mad TV").

He is also been a story-consultant on numerous feature films and TV series, including the feature film "Café Ole." He has been actively involved in the development of hundreds of other screenplays.

Wiseman has written numerous TV episodes, including many episodes of the crime series, "EXHIBIT A," (starring Graham Greene), (aka "Secrets of Forensic Science" on TLC), as well as episodes of "72 Hours: True Crime." (aka "Life Of A Crime" on TLC).

He is also a Gemini-nominated, Writer/Director ("EXHIBIT A," "Masterminds," "72 Hours: True Crime"). He is currently negotiating to direct one of his own feature screenplays.

Howard Wiseman is also a playwright, ("Mother Of Pearl," The Iron Curtain," "The Year of The Flood"),

Wiseman has an MFA in Cinema from USC in Los Angeles, has been one of the Resident Writer/Directors at NORMAN JEWISON'S Canadian Film Centre (1991-92). He has a B.A. Hons. English from Glendon College, York University, Toronto.

ADAPTATIONS OF NOVELS:

His adaptation of Mordecai Richler's novel, ""Solomon Gursky Was Here," (1998) won third place at the New York World Radio Drama Awards.

His adaptation of Mordecai Richler's novel, "Barney's Version," won a CANADIAN SCREENWRITER AWARD in 2004.

TV MINISERIES:

In 2006 Wiseman was the Co-Writer of the adaptation of "St. Urbain’s Horseman," a four hour miniseries for the CBC and Galafilm in Montreal.

DIRECTING:

Wiseman is a Gemini nominated director (for "EXHIBIT A"), has directed 24 HALF HOUR EPISODES OF TV, including the crime series "MASTERMINDS" (Court-TV-U.S.), which he developed and for which he also directed the pilot.

Wiseman also co-created and executive produces a series of one hour animated interstitials made by children, called "Kids'Works." It is broadcast across Canada, Australia, and on HBO FAMILY. He has written many episodes of various children's series including "Wimzie's House," (CBC, PBS) and Flash Forward,"(Disney Atlantis).

TEACHING:

York University Assist Professor Screenwriting (2006/07 - )

Introduction to Screenwriting course at The University of Toronto (for ten years).

He has also taught in Maine, assisting Syd Field, and in North Carolina at the NORTH CAROLINA SCREENWRITING INSTITUTE, founded by Wiseman, Buddy Cooper, and the late William Kelley.

His own private class in Toronto is ongoing.

WISEMAN RATES:

They are competitive and usually begin with an in-depth reading and approximately eight pages of written notes on a feature screenplay.

1) In Depth Reading with approximately 6-8 pages of notes regarding story, structure, character, dialogue, and specific notes on how to improve the script. Price: $450 U.S.

2) Follow up on same script. Further specific notes on the rewrite, and how to improve the script in a number of areas, plus a 1 hour phone consultation. Price $250 U.S.

3) In-Depth Reading and Consultation, including 8 pages of note, 1 1/2 hour rewrite consultation. Price $800 U.S.

Also available for consultation (writing or directorial) on TV series and pilots, including one hour TV dramas and comedies, and as an ongoing consultant to see a screenplay through from early stages to final screenplay or production. (prices to be negotiated)
