SANDI STEINBERG, "SCRIPT SURGEON!" was a journalist, playwright,
wrote two novels and a dozen short stories before becoming a screenwriter.
She now rewrites and polishes screenplays for independent producers and
production companies, and has worked in development as both Creative Director
and Script Doctor. She has lectured for Women in Film, Scriptwriter's Network,
Screenwriting Expo 2002, 2003, 2004, and teaches an ongoing screenwriting
and pitching workshop. She was one of only three people in the United States
trained as a script consultant by Dr. Linda Seger, author of eight books
on screenwriting, including, "Making a Good Script Great."
Sandi is four-star rated by Creative Screenwriting Magazine: "Steinberg's
analysis is solid, she's effective on character, offers solutions and does
not lecture, a terrific analyst and well worth the money. " And in
another issue of CS, writer, Jim Shea, said: "Sandi's notes were among
the best. Good clear crisp suggestions, a clear awareness of where the tone
become muddled. She also spotted some errors that other reviewers had overlooked."
Sandi was mentioned, as well, in an article about Hollywood in The New York
Times, and is listed in many books and articles on screenwriting. She has
acted as judge for several screenwriting competitions, including the Cable
Ace Awards and the Hartley-Merrill International Screenwriting Prize. She
is a partner in Let's-Do-Lunch where she teaches a hands-on pitching class
that has opened the door for many writers and has access to help writers
find agency representation.
Many of Sandi's consulting clients have optioned and/or had their scripts
produced. Some of the films from this list either in production or already
produced include: There Is No April, Duty Dating, One Hell Of A Guy, Night
Owls of Coventry, Emily's Song, 1500 Brazil (which she also rewrote with
director, Jim Pasternak), and two television Movies Of The Week, Robin's
Story, and The 5 Juaquins.
Sandi's first spec script, Curses, was written for and developed by Robert
McKee (of Story Structure fame). Her latest script is recently in development
with Jazbo Entertainment. Several other of her scripts, have been finalists
and semi-finalists in the Chesterfield Film Competition, Austin Heart of
Film Contest, the Fade In Screenwriting Competition, and Scripts/Splendid
Pictures Open Door Contest, where she won Second Place. Her short feature
film, You Are What You Eat, was produced by UCLA Extension as a winner in
their Short Fiction Film Competition and has gone on to win several awards
at film festivals. It has been shown at many short film collectives and
on the Sundance Channel. Her play, Bait, was performed recently at the Malibu
Stage Company in a collective of one act plays.
PRAISE FOR SANDI'S CONSULTING:
Sandi is one of three script consultants I have trained in the United States.
She is genuinely insightful about how to break down a script to understand
structure, theme and character. To this, she adds her creativity, diplomacy,
and some humor, which makes the whole process fun. I trust her knowledge
and natural ability to get to the heart of your story. You'll find Sandi
a joy to work with.
Dr. Linda Seger, Script Consultant, Author, Making A Good Script Great
Sandi has been invaluable in helping us prepare scripts for sale and production.
Devorah Cutler-Rubenstein, Executive Producer, The Substitute
Hire Sandi to consult on your screenplay and you will get profound insight,
remarkable solutions, and the emotional support of a friend. When my writers,
producers, or directors need help with their scripts, I tell them to call
Sandi.
Jim Pasternak, Director, One Hell of a Guy, Certifiably Jonathan, a documentary
on Jonathan Winter, Directing Teacher, LA Film School
Sandi Steinberg is an incisive editor and a structuralist of rare gifts
who will make your work better. Period.
Michael Jenning, Writer, Next of Kin, Spot Marks The X
Sandi has a wonderful eye for structure. She helped guide me along and
kept me on track whenever I strayed. And she made it painless.
Cherry Norris, Director, Producer, writer There Is No April and Duty Dating
Sandi's critiques are cogent, pertinent, and reliable. Her wealth of experience
as a writer enables her to pinpoint the heart of a storytelling problem.
As a writer who teaches writers, she has developed a special ability to
communicate script problems to other writers in a manner that is both respectful
of, and helpful to, their work.
Rodney Vance. Head Writer, The Evidence, Court TV, Hallmark Channel
Head Writer, Lifestyle Magazine, WABC and national syndication
I wanted to hold onto what I thought was idiosyncratic and unique about
my script without copying a formula. Sandi was brilliant, insightful, and
patient in helping me make my script more commercial and at the same time
deeper.
Maxi Cohen, Director, Producer/Writer, South Central LA, Inside Voices
Sandi Steinberg is a brilliant script consultant, and I'm very lucky to
have found her. A fine writer herself, she helped me develop my characters,
realign my structure, delineate my story, and quickly whip my script into
shape.
David Groh, Actor, Law & Order, XFiles, Melrose Place, Rhoda
I have worked with Sandi on both ends of the writing process, as a writer
and a consultant. I have found her to have experienced insight into the
writers dilemma and her consulting feedback to be on the money.
Susan Feiles, Producer, Fourth Rite Productions
Only because of Sandi's insight and brilliance was I able to reach the
level of writing I was attempting. And only because I was smart enough to
hire her, was I able to get that deal on my screenplay. There is no writer
or filmmaker out there, who couldn't benefit from Sandi's services.
Richard Marshall, Director, Writer, Pursuit of Justice
The thing that impresses me most about Sandi is her constant ability to
nail the problem. If it's structural or character-based, she knows it and
can offer suggestions to fix it. I've definitely become a better writer
because of her.
Rick Rosenberg, Writer/Director/Producer Southern Man. (Available on Netflix).
My agent recommended that I use Sandi's services and I am eternally grateful
for that recommendation. Her notes have been invaluable through several
rewrites based on her insights. The project is coming along with far better
style than it ever could without her, and a deal is now in the pending.
Jules Agular, writer, The Slatted Fence
Sandi took our diamond in the rough and helped turn it into a stylish gem.
All her comments were right on target and she's a remarkable source to work
with. We highly recommend her.
